Although carriers of the common gene variant CNTNAP2 -- identified as an autism risk gene -- may not develop autism, there is evidence of differences in brain structure that may affect connections and signaling between brain regions. These disruptions in brain connectivity can give rise to functional abnormalities characteristic of neuropsychological disorders such as autism.

Emily Dennis and coauthors from UCLA School of Medicine and UCLA (Los Angeles, CA) and University of Queensland and Queensland Institute of Medical Research (Brisbane, Australia), used a sophisticated imaging technique to study the brains of healthy young adults who are carriers of CNTNAP2.

Congress has responded.? Current federal ?obscenity? laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced.? ?If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.???

Yawn.? First, this is not true ? Congress has not banned the distribution of hard-core porn or any other (insert your favorite porn adjective here) porn.? Second, it?s mindless saber rattling.? Third, if Santorum had?more intelligence, he?d know this is bad politics and misguided social policy ? pandering to an?under-educated social minority ? to the detriment of a diverse majority.

The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws. While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration.?

?Scourge of pornography??? Is that like the ?scourge of teen pregnancy? or the ?scourge of diminishing church attendance??? If Obama?s cool with both healthy families and healthy pornography ? that sounds like a more even-keel, mature, and informed position.

I proudly support the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition that has tirelessly fought to get federal obscenity laws enforced.? That coalition is composed of 120 national, state, and local groups, including Morality in Media, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, Cornerstone Family Council of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania Family Institute, Concerned Women for America, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and a host of other groups.? Five days after the shooting, a senior U.S. official first confirmed Friday it was Bales, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the investigation into an incident that has roiled relations with Afghanistan. Military officials had said throughout the week that it was policy not to release the name until charges were filed.

Kassie Holland, who lives next door, said she would often see Bales playing with his two kids and the family together at the modern split-level home.

"My reaction is that I'm shocked," she said. "I can't believe it was him. There were no signs. It's really sad. I don't want to believe that he did it."

"He always had a good attitude about being in the service. He was never really angry about it. When I heard him talk, he said, it seemed like, yeah, that's my job. That's what I do. He never expressed a lot of emotion toward it."

Bales has not yet been charged. He was flown Friday from Kuwait and arrived Friday evening at a military detention centre at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the military's only maximum-security prison.

The Army said he was placed in his own cell, not a normal 4-person bay. He will get time out of his cell for hygiene and recreational purposes and religious support, if he desires.

An Air Force cargo jet arrived at Kansas City International Airport, about an hour from the military prison, shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. Security was tight, with the terminal completely blocked off, and convoy of unmarked vehicles pulled off the tarmac and out of the airport.

Bales enlisted about two months after the Sept. 11 attacks and had served with the 3rd Stryker Brigade based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord since Sept 11, 2002. He became a staff sergeant in April 2008, following his second deployment in Iraq.

He went to Iraq one more time before his fourth deployment, to Afghanistan.

"I kind of sympathize for him, being gone, being sent over there four times," Beau Britt, who lives across the street. "I can understand he's probably quite wracked mentally, so I just hope that things are justified in court. I hope it goes OK."

Browne said his client was injured twice while deployed to Iraq. He suffered a concussion in a vehicle accident caused by an improvised explosive device, he said, and sustained a battle-related injury requiring surgery that removed part of one foot. Browne said his client was "highly decorated."

Browne said when the 11-year veteran heard he was being sent to Afghanistan late last year, he did not want to go.

"He wasn't thrilled about going on another deployment," Browne said. "He was told he wasn't going back, and then he was told he was going."

Bales and his wife purchased the Lake Tapps home in 2005, according to records. The home was placed on the market Monday, the day after the attack, and was listed at $229,000. Overflowing boxes were piled on the front porch, and a U.S. flag leaned against the siding.

Bales completed 20 hours of anger-management counselling following a 2002 arrest at a Tacoma hotel for investigation of assault. Browne said the case involved a woman other than his wife, whom he married in 2005.

Tacoma Municipal court administrator Yvonne Pettus provided a copy of the court docket, but said clerks could not immediately locate the case file, which is either in archives or destroyed. The docket shows that Bales pleaded not guilty, underwent the 20 hours of anger management treatment, and the case was dismissed.

Records also associated with Bales show that in 2009 he had a hit and run charge dismissed in municipal court in Sumner.

The staff sergeant arrived in Afghanistan in December. On Feb. 1 he was assigned to a base in the Panjwai District, near Kandahar, to work with a village stability force that pairs special operations troops with villagers to help provide neighbourhood security.

Officials said Bales was wearing a NATO forces uniform when he moved through the nearby villages of Alkozai and Balandi, barging into homes and opening fire on those inside, then burning some of the bodies. Nine of those killed were children. Eleven of the dead were from a single family.

A surveillance video captured by a blimp that surveys the area around the base shows that the soldier later approached the south gate of the base with an Afghan shawl covering the weapon in his hands, according to an Afghan official who was shown the footage by his U.S. counterparts.

In the video, the man walks up to the base, lays down the weapon and raises his arms in surrender.

The sergeant's family says they saw no signs of aggression or anger. "They were totally shocked," by accounts of the massacre, Browne said. "He's never said anything antagonistic about Muslims. He's in general very mild-mannered."

The lawyer denied reports that Bales had marital problems, saying he and his wife have a solid relationship.

Alissa Cinkovich, 45, has lived in the neighbourhood for seven years, and said it was scary that he was living nearby.

"I would like to think he just went off his rocker because of the war," Cinkovich said.

In a Cincinnati suburb, police were stationed around the home of someone believed to be a relative of Bales. Reporters were given a statement by police and encouraged not to approach homes in the quiet Evendale neighbourhood.

In a statement, Evendale Police Chief Niel Korte said the department was aware of information that a relative of the soldier may reside in the town. He believed that identifying the resident or address "may present a threat to their physical safety."

It is well understood that hormonal treatment of advanced prostate cancer may place some patients at significant risk of cardiovascular events. Furthermore, some recent studies have indicated that men diagnosed with screening-detected prostate cancer are at lower risk for such cardiovascular events than men with clinically diagnosed prostate cancer, and that that risk reduction may be associated with the use of medications for cardiovascular disease and the change to a healthier lifestyle among men with screening-detected prostate cancer.

van Leeuwen et al. therefore decided to carry out a retrospective analysis of data from the ERSPC trial to estimate the cause-specific mortality rates unrelated to prostate cancer itself in patients with screening- and clinically diagnosed prostate cancer.

All patients who died from prostate cancer in the ERSPC trial were excluded from the analysis. The authors then categorized all the other men who died (of any cause) into two groups:

• Group A comprised men aged between 55 and 74 years who were diagnosed with screening-detected prostate cancer between 1993 and 2001. These men were each matched to two men in Group B1 (men in whom no cancer was found after biopsy), and two men in Group B2 (men in whom no cancer was suspected after screening).
• Group C comprised men aged between 55 and 74 years of age who were unscreened but were diagnosed with prostate cancer based on their clinical symptoms between 1993 and 2001. These men were each matched to four men in Group D (men without prostate cancer).

All patient matching was carried out with respect to date of birth, screening, and/or diagnosis. All patients were followed through December 31, 2007.

Here are the key findings of the re-analysis:

• There was no significant difference in overall mortality between men in Group A and men in Group B1 (relative risk [RR] = 1.26) or in Group B2 (RR = 1.13).
• For men in Group C, overall mortality was significantly higher than among men in Group D (RR = 1.43).
• The increased risk of dying from men in Group C as compared to men in Group D appeared to result from a higher rate of mortality from non-prostate cancer neoplasms and diseases of the circulatory or respiratory system among men in Group C (RR = 1.61).

The authors are careful to point out that interpretation of the results of this study is constrained by the relatively small sample size. Having said that, it does appear that there was a higher risk for non-prostate cancer mortality among men with clinically diagnosed prostate cancer compared to men with screening-detected prostate cancer. This could be interpreted to imply that the very process of going through screening for prostate cancer actually decreased the risk for overall mortality from any cause other than prostate cancer over the 14 years of this study for the men who were actually diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Not a day goes by that I don't miss her or think about her. Life is so different without her and I wish so very much that she was still here with me, wagging her tale and licking me to death the way that she always did. Even though she wasn't human, she and I had this way of communication like no other; she would stare into my eyes, speaking to me the way that only she and I could understand. When I was sad or cried, she always knew, and always came to comfort me, she would make me laugh and make my heart smile. I never felt lonely because I always knew that with one pat to my leg or blow of a kiss she would be running over with not just her tale wagging, but her whole butt. Lol, I even laugh now thinking about it. Until I was told what Lala was diagnosed with from the vet, I didn't even know that dogs could get cancer... period. The only gave her a month or two to live. I am so glad that I got to share over 6 months with her after her diagnosis. Even the last month when she started to lose weight rapidly and slowly started to lose that pep in her step she never for a moment whimpered in pain or snipped at anyone out of frustration, she was still always there for me, as if she was putting herself to the side to stay strong for me. One weekend her illness took a turn for the worse and I knew it was time for me to let her go. It was one of the hardest things I had to do, but I had no choice, I had to put myself to the side and be strong for her, just as she had done for me all those years before. With tears in my eyes and pain in my heart I said good-bye to my best friend in the whole entire world. She taught me so many things and helped me through some of the toughest moments in my life. Asia stocks rise ahead of Federal Reserve meeting

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Tuesday, shaking off a mixed day on Wall Street and slowing growth in China as investors looked ahead to meetings of the U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan.

The yen's continued retreat from record highs against the U.S. dollar boosted Japan's powerhouse export sector, pushing the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo up 0.8 percent to 9,969.15.

Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi rose 1.1 percent to 2,024.16 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1 percent to 21,250.78. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 1.1 percent to 4.244.50. Benchmarks in Taiwan and Singapore also rose, while mainland China and the Philippines fell.

Traders were awaiting a Federal Reserve policy meeting later Tuesday. Analysts don't expect the Fed to make any changes to its interest rate policy but are waiting to see if the Fed expresses confidence in the economic outlook.

Recent reports suggest that the U.S. economic recovery is gaining momentum. Employers added 227,000 jobs in February, more than analysts were expecting.

The Bank of Japan is also due to conclude a two-day monetary policy meeting later Tuesday and is not expected to loosen policy further. Its benchmark interest rate is already close to zero and the bank recently expanded an asset buying program meant to support the economy.

"We share the majority view in the market that the BOJ will refrain from additional policy easing, after just taking aggressive moves at the previous meeting in February. Economic data have improved significantly compared to one month ago," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a report.

But the global economic outlook remained fuzzy. China's trade figures released on the weekend suggested the world's No. 2 economy continues to slow.

On Monday, Greece implemented the biggest debt writedown in history when private investors agreed to accept big losses on their bond holdings. The move should help Greece stave off default later this month, but the country is still in a severe recession, and deep-rooted problems continue to haunt other struggling European economies.

On Monday, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.3 percent, to 12,959.71. The Standard & Poor's 500 rose marginally to 1,371.09. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 0.2 percent to 2,983.66.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 39 cents to $106.73 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.06 to finish at $106.34 per barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3176 from $1.3150 late Monday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.29 yen from 82.26 yen.
