Profits were down 31 percent, mostly because women aren't buying Ugg boots. The company said it was going to slash prices to draw more interest to the boots, but even that isn't guaranteed to help.?
Until now, Ugg's biggest obstacle was image. The boots were seen as sloppy and something women wore with sweatpants.?
So Ugg started advertising in fashion magazines to seem more chic. Famous Vogue creative director Andre Leon Talley even came out to endorse the boots, wearing them at New York Fashion Week.?
Ugg also hired Tom Brady as a spokesmodel to try and draw men into its stores. So far that move has been successful, and sales are up with the male contingent.?
But Ugg faces a terrifying reality: women's boots might be going out of style.?
"The worst is yet to come,"?Sam Poser, an analyst at Sterne Agee, told the Huffington Post, adding that "weaker Uggs sales might not just be due to weather, but may indicate that the boots have fallen out of fashion."?
If that's true, Ugg's problems become a lot more daunting. While the company is making strides with men, women's boots make up the vast majority of its business.?
Women are unlikely to shell out for Ugg flats or loafers because they are already loyal to other brands. Boots are the core product.?
If boots are actually out of style, Ugg will have just have to wait for the fashion cycle to turn around.?

Toronto, Ontario -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/30/2012 -- Small Business Online Coach (SBOC) (http://www.smallbusinessonlinecoach.com) is announcing publicly today its social media marketing services, which includes LinkedIn profile optimization, as well as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, and Google+ marketing services.
Matthew Hunt, the "head coach" of SBOC, was asked recently about the social media marketing service. "Since we are a social media marketing company, we consult with online businesses frequently to help increase their website traffic. We focus a lot of our attention on small businesses since they typically struggle to rank higher in the search engines and without this, they can never truly grow. If no one can find a website, it doesn't matter how user-friendly or pretty the site is, there will be no growth."
Mr. Hunt was asked about social media marketing. "Social media is a very large community of online users. Statistics don't lie, some 800 million users or 66 percent of adults who are online use Facebook, 200 million users or 20 percent of adults that use the Internet use LinkedIn, 16 percent of adults online use Twitter, and 12 percent of adults online use Pinterest. This is a lot of people that make use of social media, which is why social media marketing is such a needed service, it is a way to get targeted traffic to a website."
"Since social media websites is one of the largest areas online where people spend their time, it makes sense that it will also be where these users get news, entertainment and products. Promoting a url or a website that is shared among friends and contacts all help to increase website traffic to promote the online business", Mr. Hunt added.
Another question was posed about the LinkedIn optimization. Mr. Hunt replied, "One of the great aspects of LinkedIn optimization is it is very simple. Up until 2001, Google had a very easy way to get a website indexed, keywords were in articles or brief summaries and Google crawled the Internet, found it, and the site ranked higher. Since 2001, Google has changed their algorithms so that it makes optimization for regular websites more challenging since it has changed the rules so much over the years. However, with LinkedIn optimization, it is still quite simple and very much like it was in 2001 for Google to index the site with simple keyword usage. This makes it a great tool for higher Google rankings and more website traffic."
SBOC has answered the call of local search marketing services for small businesses. This helps give more exposure to small local businesses when users search Google. "Yes, this area has grown leaps and bounds and continues to do so. Many people use Google and look for local businesses. For instance, a user might type in "hardware stores in a particular zip code" and Google will display results that are closest to the zip code. Local search marketing is where we see a lot of demand at SBOC. This has helped us aggressively grow as a company", said Mr. Hunt.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? A new major research programme bringing University of Leicester academics in the School of Archaeology and Ancient History, and the School of Historical Studies together with expertise from the University of Hertfordshire, will examine the fate of the corpses of executed criminals.
Between 1752 and 1832 the bodies of executed murderers were legally denied burial in consecrated ground. Instead they were donated for anatomical dissection or 'hung in chains' (displayed in a gibbet). This new research programme brings together scholars from archaeology, medical and criminal history, folklore, literature and philosophy to explore the ways that the dead body of the criminal could still be powerful.
The 5-year project, supported by the Wellcome Trust with a grant for nearly a million pounds, uses the criminal corpse as a focal point from which the team can spin out to explore the many ways that human bodies were understood in the period between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries, and how attitudes that took shape at that time continue to affect our ambivalent feelings about how the dead should be treated.
"This is a great opportunity to study the history of the body at a fascinating time," said Professor Sarah Tarlow, an archaeologist at the University of Leicester and the leader of the team. "This is a key period in the development of modern medical knowledge, where the inside of the body was carefully explored and described by anatomists. At the same time it was generally believed that the touch of a hanged man's hand could cure cancers of the neck, and that suicides should be buried with a stake through their bodies.
"The emotional power of the dead body of the criminal was exploited by the State to enforce conformity with the law, they were exploited as sources of scientific or medical knowledge; they gave meaning to places in the landscape, for example, 'Gibbet Hills' and so on. At a popular level, their ghosts were believed to stalk the living and their bodies to be places of lurking malevolence which might threaten our comfortable lives -- as Frankenstein's monster did."
Professor Peter King, of the University of Leicester's Centre for English Local History, added: "We aim to look at the whole journey of the criminal body from sentencing to eventual disposal. Sentences passed were not always carried out; we want to find out what determined the eventual fate of the body. We need to locate the places where bodies were dissected and displayed -- both when they were hung in chains and when bodies or body parts were preserved as curios or as part of scientific collections."
Professor Owen Davies of the School of Humanities, University of Hertfordshire, explained how the project will also explore the use of criminal corpses in the medical and magical cultures of Europe. "One of the fascinating areas we are researching is how corpses that, in one sense, emanated evil, were also thought to have powerful beneficial healing properties for the living: in short the criminal body was life giving," he explains.
Philosopher Dr Floris Tomasini will work closely with the other team members to trace the history of some of our modern attitudes towards the dead body. "Why is there a public outcry when organs are retained by doctors after a death? Why do we attach so much importance to bringing the bodies of our war dead 'home'?" asks Dr Tomasini. "These are important questions in moral philosophy, but they have deep historical roots. I am excited to be working a new way with colleagues from other disciplines."
The team will be producing a number of academic publications but will also be setting up a website to host an online exhibition and keeping a blog of their findings and ideas as the project gets underway.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Baidu Inc, China's largest search engine company, posted its slowest quarterly revenue growth in more than two years and forecast softer-than-expected growth this quarter, hurt by weaker sales as China's economic engine sputters.
However, the company -- which still grew revenue by 50 percent in the third quarter -- said it added a record number of new advertisers for the quarter and was focusing on boosting revenue from fast-growing mobile search traffic.
"Their large customers' spending has not been so robust and has been quite flat, but Baidu has done a decent job of bringing new customers online," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of technology consultancy firm RedTech Advisors.
Baidu has dominated China's search market since Google Inc relocated its search engine to Hong Kong in a row over censorship in 2010, and accounts for nearly 80 percent of all online searches.
It posted net income of $478.6 million in the three months ended September 30, up roughly 60 percent year-on-year. Baidu said it earned $1.39 per American Depository Share in the third quarter, excluding stock-based compensation expenses.
Revenue rose 49.7 percent to $994.6 million, and Baidu forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $979.3 million to $1.010 billion, below an average analysts' forecasts of $1.03 billion according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S, but up from $715.9 million a year ago.
Despite a slowdown in spending by its big advertising customers, Baidu said it added a record number of advertisers in the third quarter and now had a total 390,000 active online marketing customers.
Credit Suisse downgraded the company in October to "underperform" from "neutral", due to concerns about its ability to monetize its mobile search traffic and worries about the erosion of its search market dominance.
Baidu Chief Executive Robin Li said on Tuesday that the firm's PC search traffic was "not as exciting" as mobile search traffic, which was growing at triple digit rates.
"We are working hard to improve the monetization system for mobile and to educate our customers to take full advantage of mobile," Li told analysts on a phone hook-up.
"But we expect it would take some time to close the gap," he added, referring to both effective monetization and moving advertisers to mobile devices.
Baidu is also facing a challenge from China's top anti-virus software firm, Qihoo 360 Technology. A search engine launched by Qihoo in August has started to gain traction, accounting for 5-10 percent of search traffic since its launch, according to data from research firm Analysys International.
But analysts don't expect Qihoo to peel away much of Baidu's search market dominance because of the sheer size of the incumbent's resources.
"It's been one of these emotional hangovers on the (Baidu) stock but the reality is Qihoo is not monetizing and won't be monetizing probably until Q1 and even then it will be at a very small base," Clendenin said.
Baidu shares have fallen about 2 percent this year on expectations that it will be hurt by slower economic growth in China, underperforming a 14 percent rise on the Nasdaq exchange.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Microsoft launched a new version of its Windows Phone software with broad support from smartphone makers, cellphone carriers and app developers as the software company tries to position new Windows gadgets as strong alternatives to Apple and Android devices.
The company also promised to address one of the chief shortcomings with Windows Phone: the dearth of third-party applications relative to offerings for Apple's iPhone and devices running Google's Android system.
Windows Phone 8 is the successor to Windows Phone 7, which launched two years ago but has had little traction in the market. The new software will run on more powerful phones with flagship models coming from Nokia, Samsung and HTC. Together, they'll launch eight Windows Phone 8 smartphones before the year is out, starting this weekend overseas and later in November in the U.S.
"People all over the world are about to fall in love with Windows Phones," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at the Windows Phone 8 launch event in San Francisco on Monday.
Microsoft said it will also catch up in offering third-party apps. There are 120,000 applications available for Windows Phone, but some apps that are popular on other systems are notably missing from Windows Phone because it can be hard to get developers interested in writing programs for a small number of smartphones.
Microsoft is patching some of those holes soon: Microsoft vice president Joe Belfiore said Internet radio service Pandora is coming to Windows Phone 8, along with games such as "Where's My Water?" Soon, he said, 46 of the 50 most popular smartphone apps will be available.
The company is also releasing an app for Skype, the Internet calling service it owns. The Skype app available for Windows Phone 7 was an unfinished, or "beta" version. The new Skype app will run in the background, listening for incoming calls without placing any drain on the battery, Belfiore said.
Microsoft scored a big endorsement from Verizon Wireless, the largest cellphone carrier in the U.S. It will carry three Windows Phones this holiday season, including its first Nokia phone in many years. No. 2 AT&T Inc. and No. 4 T-Mobile USA will also carry Windows Phones from Nokia and HTC, leaving only No. 3 Sprint Nextel Corp. out.
Verizon executives have said that they want to see a viable "third ecosystem" alongside Apple's iPhone and Google's Android. Having more potential partners to work with provides the carriers with more leverage against each one and would make them less dependent on the whims of Apple and Google.
Microsoft released Windows 8 for desktops, laptops and tablets last week. That event was devoid of surprises, as Microsoft needed to work with hundreds of partners such as computer makers ahead of time. With smartphone software, the number of partners is much smaller, so Microsoft was able to save some details for Monday's launch event.
For example, Belfiore revealed that Windows Phone 8 will come with a "Kid's Corner" feature. If enabled, kids will be able to start up the phone from the lock screen, gaining access to apps and games that the phone's owner has designated as safe for them. Belfiore brought his three children on stage to demonstrate the feature. Actress Jessica Alba lent star power to the event, endorsing Kid's Corner as a "busy mom."
Owners will also be able link apps to their lock screen, giving them at-a-glance information such as sports scores.
Windows 8 for computers has borrowed its look from Windows Phone 7, presenting applications not as icons but as "Live Tiles," which can be animated with data from the application. For instance, the "Pictures" tile shows a slideshow.
The live tiles and the distinctive user interface remain Microsoft's biggest selling points for Windows Phone. In terms of third-party applications and the features of the phones, it's mostly playing catch-up to the iPhone and Android.
Microsoft will be emphasizing the consistent look across devices in a massive advertising campaign that will talk not just about its new software, but its venture in hardware manufacturing. On Friday, Microsoft released its first tablet computer, the Surface.
"Between Windows 8, Microsoft Surface or Windows Phone 8, you won't be able to turn on the TV or open a magazine without seeing a Microsoft Windows ad," Ballmer said.

The campus is being set up by Kenya's?Kenyatta University (KU) near the sprawling ?city? of tents of Dadaab, where more than 500,000 people are sheltering from war and famine. It will serve both refugees and local Kenyans.
Humanitarian officials hail it as a first for refugees, while education experts say it's a creative solution for cases of long-term conflict in Africa.?
?Providing education can help solve conflicts in troubled zones in the long-term. With education people get sobered up. They also feel actualized and have hope for the future,? says Dr, Josephine Gitome, the director of KU?s Center for Refugees and Empowerment which is implementing the project.
KU has partnered with Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER), a Canadian and Kenyan development partnership together with international organizations and institutions to establish the Kenyatta University Dadaab Campus.
BHER is a partnership which makes educational programs available to refugees where they need it. It is providing education through online distance courses in Dadaab and along the Thai-Burma border.?
?Refugees who have completed secondary school almost universally voice the desire to attend university, but to date international scholarships in the Global North remain the only opportunity. These scholarships are few and benefit 1 percent,? Professor Wenona Giles of York University, the BHER lead partner, said in the Kenyan media.?
Some Kenyans and officials have been pushing to relocate the camp to Somalia. However, the university hasn't generated much controversy because it also serves local residents and could remain even if the camp is closed.
?It?s on our soil and so we are the greatest beneficiaries,? said Farah Maalim, a member of Parliament from the region, in a newspaper announcement.?
The campus is a big leap forward and a win-win situation for Kenya and the refugees, according to Dominik Bartsch, regional head of operations of the United Nations refugee agency.
?It will serve as an incentive for refugee children to complete school and proceed to obtain higher qualifications,? said Mr. Bartsch at the official launch of the campus on Oct. 9.
The first students start in January of 2013, and will study for certificates, bachelor diplomas in fields including Finance, Marketing, Project Management, Education, Public Administration, Community Mobilization, and Peace and Conflict studies. There will be regular courses with lectures beginning in the morning and ending in the evening, along with distance learning and weekend options.?
Moses Mukhwana, an official of the Lutheran World Federation at the camp says many refugees who could not access university education were very enthusiastic.?
?They will not need passes as often is the case when they have to join institutions out of the camp," he says, referring to identity cards that require registration with the Kenyan government. "We also hope for improved co-existence."
Mohammed Bashir, a 25-year-old refugee who serves as the camp's webmaster, said in a telephone interview; ?This is the best thing that can happen to us refugees.?

NASA's first commercial cargo flight ended with a splash on Sunday, when the SpaceX Dragon capsule landed after a landmark mission to the International Space Station.
Space news from NBCNews.com
Humanity has long dreamed of putting boots on Mars, but those boots have the potential to stomp all over any lifeforms that may exist on the Red Planet.
The unmanned Dragon space capsule, built by the U.S. company Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), splashed down into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Southern California at 3:22 p.m. EDT (1922 GMT), ending a three-week visit to the orbiting laboratory.
Dragon began its descent with a de-orbit burn at 2:28 p.m. EDT (1828 GMT), after departing the station at 9:29 a.m. EDT (1329 GMT) as both spacecraft sailed 255 miles (410 kilometers) above Burma. The station's crew used the outpost's robotic arm to release the spacecraft.
"It was nice while she was on board. We tamed her [and] took her home," space station commander Sunita Williams of NASA radioed Mission Control in Houston as the Dragon capsule departed. "Literally and figuratively, there are pieces of us on that spacecraft going home to Earth."
The Dragon capsule is returning hundreds of astronaut blood and urine samples from the space station amid the 1,673 pounds (758 kilograms) of experiments and gear loaded on board. Some of those samples have been waiting for more than a year. NASA's final space shuttle mission landed in July 2011, leaving the agency without a way to return big cargo deliveries to Earth until Dragon's flight.
[ Photos: Dragon's 1st Space Cargo Delivery ]
The spacecraft is expected to be retrieved by a SpaceX recovery crew so the cargo can be delivered to NASA. The mission is the first of 12 commercial resupply flights by SpaceX under a $1.6 billion deal with NASA.
The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX (short for Space Exploration Technologies) launched the Dragon capsule toward the space station on Oct. 7 using one of the company's own Falcon 9 rockets and a pad at Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The capsule was packed with 882 pounds (400 kg) of supplies to for the station, including 260 pounds (117 kg) of crew gear, 390 pounds (176 kg) of scientific equipment, 225 pounds (102 kg) of hardware and several pounds of other cargo, NASA officials said.
The cargo returning home on Dragon are 163 pounds (74 kg) of crew supplies, 866 pounds (392 kg) of scientific research and 518 pounds (235 kg) of other hardware, they added. ?
SpaceX is the first robotic spacecraft ever to be capable of returning cargo to Earth.
"It has been an historic mission," NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said during undocking commentary. ?
The unmanned cargo ships built by Russia, Japan and Europe are all designed for one-way trips and are intentionally destroyed during re-entry at the end of their missions. The Russian Soyuz capsules that ferry crews to and from the space station have limited cargo return capabilities, NASA scientists have said.
SpaceX was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002 as a private spaceflight company. In May, the company launched its first Dragon capsule test flight to the space station to set the stage for this month's first cargo delivery flight. The next Dragon cargo mission is slated to launch in mid-January.
SpaceX is one of two companies with deals to launch cargo delivery flights on unmanned spacecraft for NASA. The other company, Virginia's Orbital Sciences Corp., has a $1.9 billion contract with the agency for at least eight missions to the station using the new Antares rocket and Cygnus spacecraft. The first Antares test flight is set for later this year.
With its space shuttle fleet retired, NASA is relying on the Dragon and Cygnus spacecraft to ferry U.S. supplies to and from the International Space Station. The space agency is also supporting the development of new commercial U.S. spacecraft to launch American astronauts on space station trips.
SpaceX is one of four companies currently developing manned private space taxis with NASA funding support. The company is upgrading its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsules to eventually launch crews of seven astronauts into orbit.

Education today is worlds apart from what it was in the past. Even compared to just ten years ago, learning has never been so easy. With the combination of children's encyclopedia software, children's dictionary software and children's thesaurus software, today's students have very powerful research tools, that students could only dream about only a decade ago.
The future is now in better education and digital research tools give some students an advantage in the amount and depth of learning they receive from their classes and teachers. Even if schools do not use these modern educational research tools, parents that provide them for their child will reap the benefits with the children when they see higher grades school.
A quality children's encyclopedia software set allows a student to search on almost any topic imaginable, while receiving cross referenced notes and citations that can be properly used as references in reports and essays. Every subject a student studies and researches has cross references and links to other relevant topics. This type of educational format allows a student to learn more in an interesting and useful manner. Children learn more and learn faster than was ever possible in the past.
