Review: $279 Chromebook good as secondary computer - Phys.org

Hewlett-Packard's new Chromebook 11 is a laptop at heart, but it's light and portable enough to work well in places where you'd normally prefer a tablet.

I'm thinking cramped buses and airplanes, the waiting area of a doctor's office or even the cushiony couch in your living room. The Chromebook is small enough to rest comfortably on your lap and easy to carry when you need to pick up and go.

The drawback is it relies heavily on the Internet to run various services, so you'll need to plan ahead if you're looking to write that great masterpiece without access to Wi-Fi. That's because the Chromebook doesn't run Windows or Mac OS, like the majority of laptops. Rather, it uses Google's Chrome OS system, which needs a steady Internet connection.

Although it's possible to use apps while offline, Chromebooks are really designed for online use. Many apps don't work fully—or at all—without the Internet connection, or they need to be configured while you still have the connection to work offline. It's not as simple as installing a program and expecting it to work wherever you are. In addition, Chromebooks have little storage on the devices; Google steers you toward its online storage service, Drive, for your documents, photos, music and movies.

Chromebooks aren't meant for graphic designers who use sophisticated software, such as Adobe's Photoshop, or business executives who rely on Microsoft's PowerPoint slides. These notebooks are for people who primarily use Google's online services, including search, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Maps and Google's players for music and video. That includes schoolchildren who need a computer for homework and merchants who want something small next to a cash register.

As Google reasons, if you're already using many of its services, why not use a device optimized for it? These devices can be fast because they get their sophistication from powerful servers located elsewhere. The Chromebook 11 takes just a few seconds to power up, as Chrome OS doesn't have a lot to load on the device itself.

Chrome OS notebooks are also really cheap: The Chromebook 11 costs just $279.

The HP Chromebook 11 is displayed at a Google event, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013 in New York. The new $279 laptop, based on Google's Internet-centric Chrome operating system, borrows many of the high-end features found in a model that costs about $1,000 more. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)

That price is in line with most other Chromebooks, including a $249 model from Samsung and a $199 model from Acer. But the new Chromebook has many high-end features inspired by a much pricier model, the $1,299 Chromebook Pixel designed and made by Google through contract factories in Asia.

The new Chromebook's speakers are underneath the keyboard, so sound projects out at you. Its outer shell is sleek and smooth. It doesn't have the Pixel's metal exterior, but there's magnesium underneath the plastic to keep the laptop sturdy. The Chromebook 11 has no sharp edges or corners—or even screw holes. There's no fan either, which keeps the device quiet and light—at just 2.3 pounds (1 kilogram).

In fact, the Chromebook 11 isn't much heavier than Microsoft's upcoming Surface Pro 2 tablet, which weighs 2 pounds (0.91 kilograms). The Chromebook's 11.6-inch (29.46-centimeter) screen, measured diagonally, isn't much larger than the screen of the typical full-size tablet. The new Chromebook even uses the same Micro-USB charger that non-Apple tablets and smartphones use. No longer do you have to keep track of which charger goes with which device or pack an extra charger for a vacation.

The Chromebook 11 could pass for a tablet if it weren't for the fact that it unfolds to reveal a physical keyboard. It also lacks a touch screen. You move the cursor on the screen the traditional way, using the laptop's touchpad.

The new Chromebook has a low-resolution camera for videoconferencing, and it promises battery life of up to six hours. There are some perks, too: 100 gigabytes of storage through Google Drive for two years, rather than the standard 15 gigabytes, and 12 free sessions of Wi-Fi access on airplanes through Gogo.

There's a lot to like with the Chromebook 11.

But just like tablets, Chromebooks aren't ready to replace traditional Windows and Mac computers. Even if most of your life is online, there'll be the occasional program that will run only on a Windows or Mac machine. Photo editing is one task that comes to mind. Internet-based editing tools on the Chromebook and elsewhere aren't as sophisticated as stand-alone programs such as Photoshop, Google's Picasa and Apple's iPhoto.

A dozen HP Chromebook 11's, are displayed at a Google event, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013 in New York. Speakers are tucked under the keyboard so that sound comes out toward the user, even when the laptop is used on the lap. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)

And while the Chromebook has apps for word processing and spreadsheets, there's no replacement for Microsoft's Office package. I don't like the fact that Google's Docs package isn't configured automatically to work offline. And even after I configured it manually, the switch between online and offline use isn't very smooth and often requires refreshing the page.

That's not an issue if you're online most of the time. The days of one device per person, let alone per household, have long passed in much of the U.S. I can see the Chromebook 11 being a great secondary computer for many people, especially for those with ready access to Wi-Fi.

ABOUT THE HP CHROMEBOOK 11

The new HP Chromebook 11 from Hewlett-Packard Co. is the latest laptop to use Google's Chrome OS operating system. The Chromebook line is known for its budget pricing, and the Chromebook 11 costs just $279. It's available starting Tuesday at Google's online Play store and selected retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon.

The laptop comes in white or black. The white model has a choice of four accents around the keyboard and under the device: blue, red, yellow and green.

Daily Digit: Oil Thefts Hurt Shell

Daily Digit: Oil Thefts Hurt Shell | www.wokv.com

$4.6 billion dollars is today's daily digit - the amount Royal Dutch Shell's profits fell by in the second quarter of the year. That's more than $1 billion dollars down on the same time last year. Shell said it was largely due to higher costs and a surge in Nigerian oil thefts, which cost them $700 million. Shell recently has put some of its Niger Delta operations up for sale. But outgoing CEO Peter Voser says it's still committed to Africa.

Genetics: More than merely a mutated gene

[unable to retrieve full-text content]If two women have the same genetic mutation that puts them at higher-than-average risk for a disease such as breast cancer, why does only one develop the disease? Genetic scientists have begun to understand how the rest of the genome interacts with such mutations to cause the differences we see among individuals.

Drowned Horsham man's family holds golf outing in his memory

Last August, the family of Horsham resident Brad Smith described him as a role model after his sudden death while visiting the Jersey Shore.

Smith was walking with another man and their daughters in the knee-deep waters of southern New Jersey when the sand beneath them suddenly gave way and all four were pulled into the ocean by the undertow. The others survived, but the body of the 54-year-old was found several days later on a North Wildwood beach.

One year later, Smith?s family is hosting the first Brad Smith Memorial Golf Outing in his memory, and all the proceeds will go to college funds for Smith?s two children, who are 8 and 12 years old.

The event, which is slated for Sept. 6 at the PineCrest Golf Club in Lansdale, will include 18 holes of golf, several contests, including longest and straightest drive, and dinner.

Jared Gaeta, Brad?s son-in-law, who previously described Smith as ?a man in every sense of the word,? said the event has enough golfers. What is needed are ?sponsors for each hole? and donations.

According to Gaeta, Smith?s last act before he was taken by the undertow was saving his youngest daughter by pushing her into calm waters.

For more information on the event, visit golf4brad.com.

Six held over violence in France after police check veiled woman

PARIS (Reuters) - Six people were arrested after overnight violence that erupted in a Paris suburb after police checked the identity of a woman wearing a Muslim veil, French authorities said on Saturday.

Public disturbances have shaken depressed, largely immigrant quarters of major French cities at regular intervals for years, often triggered by resentment over spot police checks.

It is illegal in France for women to wear full face veils in public but the law is contested in the mainly Muslim suburbs that ring major cities - where tensions reign in relations between residents and police.

In Trappes, a gritty suburb southwest of Paris, police said a crowd gathered in response to the arrest on Thursday of a man who had assaulted a police officer during an identity check on his wife, who was entirely veiled.

Some 250 people who collected outside the Trappes police station on Friday night threw stones and other projectiles and destroyed property before being repelled by riot police in the early hours of Saturday, a police statement said.

A witness said the crowd called on police to release the husband but were "insulted" by authorities.

"They (the police) didn't want to listen and it got out of control," the man, who gave his name as Sofiane, told iTele. "Trappes is a big family. When you attack us we're going to respond."

Police said order was restored by daybreak in Trappes, an area of grim housing estates, but that reinforcements sent in overnight would remain in coming hours to help ensure calm.

Authorities dealing with immigrant unrest fear a repeat of riots in 2005, France's worst for 40 years, when nationwide violence led to the imposition of a state of emergency.

In Trappes, as cleanup crews cleared away shattered glass from bus shelters, burned trash bins and stones littering the pavement, the chief administrator of the department (county) of Yvelines described the suburb as "calm and serene."

"We will maintain this calm in the coming hours," Prefect Erard Corbin de Mangoux told journalists. "Police will stay put until we believe the threat is over."

Chinese state paper slams multinationals over bribery, high prices

BEIJING | Wed Jul 17, 2013 12:46am EDT

BEIJING (Reuters) - China must crack down on commercial bribery by multinational firms, the country's top state paper said on Wednesday, two days after police accused British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline of the widespread bribery of Chinese officials and doctors.

In a commentary, the People's Daily newspaper accused some multinationals of using their market dominance to exploit gaps in regulatory systems in developing countries.

The article suggests Chinese authorities are not about to step back from a spate of investigations launched in recent months into how foreign companies do business in China, from the setting of prices to quality controls.

"A crackdown on commercial bribery by multinationals is deeply significant to safeguarding the order of the market economy and protecting an environment of fair competition," said the commentary in the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party.

Chinese police on Monday accused GlaxoSmithKline of bribing officials and doctors to boost sales and raise the price of its medicines in China. Police said GSK transferred up to 3 billion yuan ($489 million) to 700 travel agencies and consultancies over six years to facilitate the bribes.

In response, GSK said it was deeply concerned by the developments, which it called "shameful".

A second commentary in the People's Daily said China must "lift a sharp sword to pierce the improper, even illegal, costs behind rising drug prices" for which multinationals, such as GSK, were responsible.

The first article said the GSK case was an illustration of "the commercial anti-corruption struggle" in China. Project bidding and tax systems for multinationals were also problematic, the commentary said, without giving details.

"In recent years, some multinationals have utilized strong market and technological advantages, operated through intermediary agents, and taken advantage of the imperfect regulatory system in developing countries to drill loopholes," the commentary said.

FOCUS ON FOREIGN FIRMS

Some experts have suggested China may be expanding an anti-corruption drive beyond government ranks and domestic companies including state-run entities, focusing now on foreign firms.

China has targeted foreign firms on multiple fronts in the past few months, although the probe into GSK is the only high-profile, publicly known investigation focused on bribery.

European food companies Nestle and Danone said early this month they would cut infant milk formula prices in China after Beijing launched an investigation into the industry.

Chinese media has been giving the GSK story plenty of attention.

On Tuesday night, state broadcaster CCTV night aired an interview with one of four detained Chinese executives from GSK.

Liang Hong, vice president and operations manager of GSK (China) Investment Co Ltd, offered details on how he funneled money through travel agencies by arranging conferences, some of which were never held.

"To have contact with some government departments you need money that you cannot normally expense to the company," Liang said during the broadcast.

Liang said he paid bribes to officials from the powerful planning agency, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, which are among those required to get medicines approved or prices set.

It is rare for state TV to carry such interviews, although state news agency Xinhua had earlier been given access to Liang. (Reporting By Megha Rajagopalan and Michael Martina. Editing by Dean Yates)

Cleveland Heights Golf Course Getting Renovations

Published: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 3:58 p.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at 3:58 p.m.

The centerpiece of the overall project is rebuilding greens on the A Course under the direction of Lakeland golf course architect Ron Garl.

"It was time to address them and improve the putting surfaces for playability," said Brock Witmyer, general manager at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.

"I think it's been a long time coming," Witmyer said. "I think folks are going to be real happy with it."

The condition of the greens at the city's 27-hole public course has been in decline, a source of ongoing complaints by area golfers because of spots where grass had died, leaving bare sand and uneven, bumpy putts.

"We don't expect a country club. But we expect grass," said Paul Boeh of Lakeland, a longtime member who organizes the Cleveland Heights Men's Golf Association tournaments on Wednesdays.

"We're just all hopeful that this works," said Boeh, 69. "There's a lot of long-term members who are hopeful, and a lot of young players."

The project also includes:

A new irrigation system.

New forward tees on several holes.

Laser-leveling existing tee boxes.

Installing new netting between the driving range and No. 9C.

Repairing cart paths.

And paving the south end of the south parking lot.

"The city manager's office, the commissioners, they want this to work," said Bob Donahay, Lakeland's director of parks and recreation. "They want it to make money. That's why they've given us so much leeway to put more money into the course, even though it's losing so much money right now."

DRAIN ON BUSINESS

Many public and private courses are struggling in Polk County and around the nation. The National Golf Foundation reports that 155 courses closed nationally in 2012, compared with 14 openings, and that 68 percent of those that closed were public courses.

The closings of The Golf Club at BridgeWater in Lakeland and Sun Air in Haines City in 2011 exemplified what the NGF said is a net reduction of 500 courses nationwide since 2006.

In addition, there have been ownership or management changes because of financial hardship in the past few weeks at two Winter Haven courses ? Lake Region Yacht and Country Club and Willowbrook Golf Course.

Donahay, who became director 18 months ago, said Cleveland Heights is losing about $800,000 per year, which is subsidized by the city.

Witmyer said memberships have dropped significantly in the past five years, partly because the struggling economy has impacted discretionary spending but also because of the deteriorating quality of the greens.

"You pay your 20 bucks to putt. It's not fun when the greens aren't good," said Boeh, a member since 1990.

Some golfers are taking their business to other courses.

"There's people in my Wednesday group that said they'll come back when the greens get in shape," Boeh said, echoing a common sentiment.

Witmyer said there are about 125 memberships today, compared with 325-350 five years ago.

"A couple of years ago, we made some cuts to the budget," Witmyer said. "That maybe hurt us a little bit. I think that the golf course has gotten better. We're making improvements. I think people can see that we're improving the course. We want people to come here. We want to be the best municipal course in Central Florida."

Donahay said there are currently about 51,000 rounds per year played at Cleveland Heights, a William Flynn design that opened in 1925.

"We're hoping to see a spike," Donahay said. "To make a dent in the deficit, we need to be at 65,000 rounds."

UPGRADES THAT PAY

The bulk of the $175,500 project is $84,500 for green renovations on the A Course.

Garl is chairman of the greens committee, which had soil samples sent to the United States Golf Association's Green Section for testing this spring before finalizing a recommendation to the city for the best approach to revitalize putting surfaces.

Following strict protocols, the greens were rebuilt, scraping away the top four inches and replacing that material with a pristine mix of sand and peat. After smoothing and reshaping the surfaces, they were sprigged with Tif-Dwarf Bermuda grass last week.

Dustin Plemons, the course superintendent, said the goal is for play to reopen on the A Course on Oct. 15.

The greens are being rebuilt for the first time since 1999, when the A and B Courses were completely redone.

Donahay said greens on the B Course will be renovated next year right after the 4-Ball Invitational golf tournament in early April.

"The good thing about Cleveland Heights is a lot of people in Lakeland grew up playing the Heights," Donahay said. "It's kind of like being a Red Sox fan, or a Yankees fan.

"Everybody wants to gravitate back to the Heights. But because the product went south, we lost a lot of folks," he said. "We're hoping with an improved course, those people will come back."

Donahay has already enhanced the food and beverage part of the balance sheet. He said profits in the bar and restaurant have increased from $8,000 in 2011 to $80,000 in the 2013 budget year that ends Sept. 30.

He is hopeful that upgrades to the golf course will pay off as well.

"We're taking that same business plan and applying it to the greens side," Donahay said.

In addition to greens, project improvements include $30,000 for a new irrigation controller, $36,000 to repair cart paths and pave the south end of the south parking lot, and $25,000 for the driving range net that was left in tatters by the hurricanes in 2004.

The $84,500 for green renovations includes putting down sod on the practice putting green, work on tee boxes, reshaping the driving range tee area, and adding 10 artificial grass mats on concrete pads at the driving range for golfers to warm up on in addition to the existing turf area.

The top 4 inches of material removed from greens is being used to create new forward tees on some holes.

Donahay said 7,000 feet of cart paths ? out of a total of 25,400 feet or about 5 miles of paths ? will be repaired by the city's Public Works Department.

"We don't want people to come back and say, ?Wow, you guys hit a home run on the greens side, but those cart paths are terrible,'?" Donahay said. "We want people to come back and say, ?Greens excellent. Cart paths excellent. What a difference!' That's what we're shooting for.

"We want to show people that the city is committed to putting out a good product."

Four dead after planes collide and crash near Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) ? Authorities say two small planes collided and then crashed in the desert north of Phoenix on Friday, killing all four people aboard the two aircraft.

Phoenix and Daisy Mountain Fire Department officials said the collision and crash involved two single-engine planes with two people in each aircraft.

An initial report said three people were killed and two people were injured. Fire officials with the Peoria Fire Department and Daisy Mountain Fire Department later announced four people had died and there were no survivors.

Television news footage showed only charred wreckage left from one of the planes, while the other was fairly intact.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate.

Winfrey to speak at Harvard commencement exercises

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is the featured speaker during afternoon exercises at Harvard University's commencement.

Harvard's 362nd commencement begins Thursday morning with the annual conferring of degrees and honorary degrees. Winfrey and Harvard President Drew Faust will both address attendees during afternoon exercises, which serve as the annual meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association.

Faust calls Winfrey's rise to global prominence one of the great American success stories.

Winfrey's private foundation has awarded hundreds of grants to organizations that promote education and support women, and children and families worldwide.

Forbes listed Winfrey as the 11th most powerful woman in the world last year. She has a net worth of $2.7 billion.

NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console hits the FCC, ships by ...

NVIDIA?s Shield made a stop at the FCC this week on its way to store shelves. NVIDIA started taking pre-orders for its first handheld gaming console a few weeks ago, and it?s expected to ship to customers by the end of June.

While the FCC documents don?t tell us much we didn?t already know, there is one interesting detail.

NVIDIA Shield at the FCC

The label drawing refers to the game console by its code-name, ?Project Thor.? When NVIDIA CEO Jen Hsung Huang introduced the device during a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, he accidentally referred to the device by that name at one point.

He then brushed it off, saying that it?s hard to remember which code-name goes with which project, and I wasn?t the only one who thought he?d accidentally let the name of a?different top-secret project slip. But apparently he didn?t. He just accidentally used the name people had been using behind the scenes instead of the new official name for the gaming device.

The NVIDIA Shield looks like an Xbox-style game controller with a 5 inch, 720p display attached to it. The device is powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, supports HDMI output so you can play games on your TV, and also lets you stream PC games over a wireless network so that you can play games installed on a computer with an NVIDIA graphics card on a mobile device that you can carry around the house.

NVIDIA?s game console is up for pre-order for $349.

Former Saab chairman to be questioned in Swedish tax inquiry

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Former Saab Chairman Victor Muller will be called in to answer questions related to a Swedish inquiry into alleged tax offences at the bankrupt carmaker, the country's Economic Crime Authority said on Tuesday.

Muller, chief executive of the Spyker sports-car group that bought Saab from General Motors in 2010, is not suspected of wrongdoing.

"The Gothenburg district attorney has confirmed that Mr Muller is not a suspect and may be invited for an interview after summer, possibly in October," Spyker said in a statement.

Prosecutors are looking into allegations that executives at Saab, which collapsed in 2011, obstructed proper tax checks over the years 2010 to 2011.

The period being examined was a turbulent time for the company, taking in its sale by General Motors and subsequent emergence of problems that led to its collapse.

Katinka Wall, a spokeswoman at the Swedish Economic Crime Authority, confirmed that Muller would be summoned as part of the wider investigation and that he is not being served as a suspect.

She declined to provide further details.

Swedish prosecutors last week questioned Saab's former Chief Executive Jan-Ake Jonsson and two other executives as part of its tax investigation.

google_admin_logoGoogle has continuously made its Google Apps Admin Console for IT professionals who manage large Google Apps for Business, Education and Government deployments in their companies more powerful. But one thing it never offered these administrators was a mobile app to manage at least a subset of the Admin console's features. Today, however, Google finally released its first official Android app that allows admins to perform many common tasks right on their phones and tablets.

Report: Plans for Australia spy HQ hacked by China

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Australian officials on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny whether Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints of a new spy agency headquarters as a news report claims. A tiny party essential to the ruling coalition's government demanded an inquiry into how much damage may have been done.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. television reported on Monday night that the plans for the 630 million Australian dollar ($608 million) Australian Security Intelligence Organization building had been stolen through a cyberattack on a building contractor. Blueprints that included details such as communications cabling, server locations and security systems had been traced to a Chinese server, the network reported.

Des Ball, an Australian National University cybersecurity expert, said China could use the blueprints to bug the building, which is nearing completion in Canberra, the capital, after lengthy construction delays.

Ball told the ABC that given the breach, ASIO would either have to operate with "utmost sensitivity" within its own building or simply "rip the whole insides out and ... start again."

Attorney General Mark Dreyfus, the minister in charge of the spy agency, on Tuesday refused to confirm or deny the report, citing a longstanding government policy of declining to comment on security matters.

He later said the lakeside glass and concrete structure did not need to be redesigned, and that ASIO will move in this year.

"This building is a very secure, state-of-the-art facility," said Dreyfus, adding that the ABC report contained "unsubstantiated allegations."

"I'm not going to comment on operational matters involving the Australian Security Intelligence Organization or any security matters," he said.

Questioned about the alleged security breach in Parliament, Prime Minister Julia Gillard described the ABC report as "inaccurate" but refused to go into detail.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China opposed hacking in any form and questioned what evidence the ABC report relied on.

"Since it is technically untraceable, it is very difficult to find the source and identify the hacker," Hong said. "Therefore we have no idea what is the evidence for their report in which they make the claim with such certainty."

He said countries needed to cooperate to fight hacking. "Groundless accusations won't solve the problem," Hong said.

The minor Greens party, which the center-left Labor Party relies on to maintain its minority government, has demanded an inquiry into the future of the troubled building, which has been plagued by cost blowouts from an original budget of 460 million Australian dollars.

"It is time that we had an independent inquiry into the whole sorry history of the ASIO building and the extent to which the current hacking has compromised its capacity to ever be the building and serve the purpose for which it was intended," Greens leader Christine Milne told reporters.

She said no more money should be spent on the building until an inquiry was held into the truth of the hacking allegation and the extent of the alleged security compromise.

The alleged hacking would appear to be "an extremely serious breach" to Australia's intelligence-sharing allies, including the United States, Milne said.

Dreyfus didn't immediately respond to the Greens' call for an inquiry.

ASIO, Australia's main spy agency, has grown rapidly since the al-Qaida attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and needs the new headquarters to house its growing staff that has trebled to almost 1,800 in a decade.

Tobias Feakin, a security analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, said that if a security breach has occurred, it could affect intelligence sharing with allies.

"There is no doubt that instances like this, if proved true, create a period of difficulty," Feakin said. "But one thing that would happen is that there would be mutual assistance provided to be able to plug that gap and no intelligence agency could possibly allow that kind of breach to continue."

Foreign Minister Bob Carr refused to discuss the allegations but said the claims do not jeopardize Australia's ties with its most important trading partner, China.

"It's got absolutely no implications for a strategic partnership," Carr said. "We have enormous areas of cooperation with China."

(AP) ? Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic squeezed his upper left arm with his right hand, looked straight ahead and spoke in a level tone about his father, who is also his coach ? and was banned from attending the French Open because of a pending assault case.

"He's here right now in Paris, so, you know, he's still working with me, he's still my dad, he's still my coach," the 20-year-old Tomic said Tuesday. "And, you know, I love him a lot."

That was part of a 40-second opening statement Tomic delivered at his news conference after retiring from his first-round match at Roland Garros in the third set because of a torn right hamstring. Tomic's father, John, is due in a Spanish court in October, accused of head-butting Bernard's hitting partner in Madrid this month.

The ATP and International Tennis Federation both barred John Tomic from receiving credentials for tournaments. The French tennis federation announced Monday it had told the ATP, Bernard Tomic and his agent that the father would not be allowed onto the grounds of the clay-court Grand Slam tournament, even as a paying spectator.

"Nothing's changed between my dad and I," Bernard said. "It's still the same."

After the 61st-ranked Tomic stopped while trailing 7-5, 7-6 (8), 2-1 against Victor Hanescu of Romania, a reporter asked what it was like to not have a coach courtside Tuesday.

"It's a little bit different, but, you know, my dad's still my coach, and he'll always be, because, you know, I grew up with him and he knows me better than everyone else," Tomic said, while also noting he is considering adding another person to help work with them.

Tomic began playing tennis at age 7. In 2011, at only 18, he became the youngest quarterfinalist at Wimbledon since Boris Becker in the 1980s. Viewed as Australia's most promising player, he's taken a step back, though, making only one fourth-round appearance in the seven Grand Slam tournaments since.

And his nascent career has been marked by off-court issues. In November, he was fined and put on a 12-month good-behavior bond after twice being stopped by Australian police for driving offenses near his Gold Coast home.

"I showed that I can play, but this is the problem at a young age ? you're up and down," he said. "So I've got to just keep working hard, keep trying, because once I get there and get to where I want to be, then there's no stopping me."

A moderator began Tomic's postmatch news conference by saying: "Before we start, Bernard has a few things to say, and we won't be taking questions after his comments, other than on the match, OK?"

Tomic then began: "Hello, guys. I hope you're well. You know, I'd like to say some things before you guys ask me about them ? obviously involving my father."

He added: "Involving the incidents that happened, I don't want to talk about it a lot ? at all, if I should say. And it's a very difficult thing for me, you know, to put my words into that. If you can respect all I have to say about this, you know, I'm happy to talk about the match."

John Tomic had not been seen at the Roland Garros complex Tuesday, French federation spokesman Christophe Proust said.

"We've taken maximum precautions not to let him in," Proust said, adding that the younger Tomic "was playing on Court No. 6, which is a small court, so it's easy to see who's in the stands."

The hitting partner that John Tomic is accused of injuring, Thomas Drouet, is now working with French player Marion Bartoli, who won in the first round at the French Open on Tuesday.

"During training and during the match, he helped me a lot," Bartoli said.

After only three games against Hanescu, Bernard Tomic called for a trainer to work on his right leg. After getting his hamstring massaged, Tomic continued to play but was limping.

"It's very unlucky. I prepared very good to come play here, and the second point, I felt my leg sort of tear and didn't know what it was. It was very strange. I never felt this pain before," Tomic said.

When he headed to the locker room during a rain delay, a doctor told him the muscle was torn.

"Lucky it's not huge. It's not eight weeks, it's not six weeks; probably just a week or two. So I'm going to try as much as I can to recover" in time for Wimbledon, Tomic said.

Clearly, there is a lot on this college-age kid's mind at the moment.

By the end of his potentially awkward 10-minute session with reporters ? a son discussing his in-trouble father ? Tomic was making himself smile.

When he was asked whether he felt a bit lost without support Tuesday, he replied with a chuckle: "No, I just didn't feel my leg at all. That's all I didn't feel. So if I hadn't done what I did to my leg, maybe I would have thought about that. But considering that I couldn't feel my leg, that's all I was thinking about."

IRS Blunder Gives Republicans Ammunition in Effort to Defund the Agency

The Internal Revenue Service?s admission that it inappropriately targeted conservative political groups for special scrutiny during the 2012 presidential election only gives congressional Republicans more ammunition as they try to defund and weaken the agency.

For the past few years, Republican lawmakers have sought to slash the?funding of the IRS. Reducing the agency?s budget makes it more difficult for it to collect taxes and audit individuals. (Score one for Republicans who dislike high taxes).

But, more importantly, the IRS is also one of the key agencies that will implement the Affordable Care Act. Much of the funding stream for the incoming health care law, arguably the president?s signature legislative achievement, comes from?two tax increases: a 3.8 percent hike on investment income for wealthy individuals, estates, and trusts, as well as an additional Medicare tax.

By stripping the IRS of money, the Republicans are indirectly trying to attack the roll-out of the health care law that begins in 2014.

Now, the news that rogue, low-level IRS agents in Ohio investigated conservative groups improperly just adds fuel to the Republicans? bashing. The agents investigated these organizations to see if they had miscast themselves as tax-exempt groups while actually doing political work. About 75 groups were targeted, according to the Associated Press.

An IRS official admitted that this was wrong and inappropriate at a Friday conference sponsored by the American Bar Association, in a speech that should reverberate throughout the political world for the next several days.

Quickly, inboxes in D.C. filled with statement after statement from Republican lawmakers, expressing outrage at the agency and calls for more accountability and investigations.??As several Senators and I wrote to the IRS last year, there can be no tolerance for the IRS being turned into a political weapon,? Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said in a statement. ?The American people deserve to know who at the IRS learned about this unlawful activity, when they learned about it, and what they did, or did not, do when they did learned about it.?

The former Republican head of the Office of Management and Budget, Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, also chimed in: ?How were 'low-level workers in Cincinnati' able to initiate practices that completely undermine the IRS?s promise to treat all groups with an even hand?? he said in a statement. ?Even more, what were they hoping to do with the copious personal information they obtained from these groups??

The IRS Commissioner in 2012, Douglas Shulman, left the agency in November when his tenure ended. President Obama has not yet named a replacement.
