LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The makers of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" and game publisher Activision Blizzard Inc. have agreed to lay down arms in a legal fight over millions of dollars in royalties.

The two sides said Thursday that they had settled the lawsuit. The terms were not disclosed.

Jason West and Vincent Zampella, former heads of game studio Infinity Ward, had sued Activision for wrongful dismissal after the company fired them in January 2010. The pair also sought more than $36 million in bonuses based on the game's profits.

They later formed a new company called Respawn Entertainment LLC, which is developing games for Activision's rival Electronic Arts Inc.

Two weeks ago, Activision and EA settled a lawsuit over whether EA unfairly recruited the executives while they were under contract.

Loss through melting and iceberg calving during the last 10 years is unusually high compared to the last 50 years

The Greenland ice sheet continues to lose mass and thus contributes at about 0.7 millimeters per year to the currently observed sea level change of about 3 mm per year. This trend increases each year by a further 0.07 millimeters per year. The pattern and temporal nature of loss is complex. The mass loss is largest in southwest and northwest Greenland; the respective contributions of melting, iceberg calving and fluctuations in snow accumulation differing considerably. This result has been published by an international research group led by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in the latest issue of Earth and Planetary Science Letters, 1 June 2012. The result was made possible by a new comparison of three different types of satellite observations: measurements of the change in gravity by changes in ice mass with the satellite pair GRACE, height variation with the laser altimeter on the NASA satellite ICESat and determination of the difference between the accumulation of regional atmospheric models and the glacier discharge, as measured by satellite radar data.

For the first time and for each region, the researchers could determine with unprecedented precision which percentage melting, iceberg calving and fluctuations in rainfall have on the current mass loss. "Such an increase in mass loss in the northwest after 2005 is partly due to heavy snowfall in the years before", says GFZ scientist Ingo Sasgen, head of the study. "The previous mass gain was reduced in subsequent years. Similarly in eastern Greenland: In the years 2008 and 2009 there was even a mass increase". As the researchers were able to show, this was not due to decreased glacier velocities, but because of two winters with very heavy snowfall. Meanwhile, the loss of ice mass continues here. For all studied regions the melting and calving periods between 2002 and 2011 are extraordinarily high compared to those of the last five decades.

The work was created in the framework of the Helmholtz Climate Initiative REKLIMof the Helmholtz Association and the EU project ice2sea. Due to the study, the researchers can get a little closer to understanding the current developments of the Greenland ice sheet. Ingo Sasgen: "We now know very well how calving glaciers and melting contribute to the current mass balance, and when regional trends are largely caused by rainfall variations. And we also know where our measurements must be improved." One such area is north-western Greenland, where the comparison of data indicates an abrupt increase in the calving rate, which was detected by the radar data inadequately. The REKLIM/ice2sea scientists want to find out what causes this increase and if it has a continuous or episodic character. A necessary prerequisite is a sufficiently long time series of measurements that is to be created by the continued precise gravity measurements in the context of the new satellite mission GRACE-FO (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment Follow On).

MOSCOW (AP) ? Both sides in the Syria conflict "had a hand" in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in Houla, Russia's foreign minister said Monday, calling for a full investigation.

The comments by Sergey Lavrov came a day after the U.N. Security Council, which includes Russia, blamed the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in Houla, a collection of villages near the central city of Homs, but avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of at least 108 men, women and children.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the governmental troops," Lavrov said after talks in Moscow with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, or that many of the bodies were found with wounds indicating the victims had been shot at close range or tortured.

"The guilt has to be determined objectively," Lavrov said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement a peace plan put forward by special envoy Kofi Annan, who arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad and other senior Syrian officials. Annan's six-point plan calls on both sides to respect a cease-fire.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."

Lavrov called for all in the international community to focus on implementing Annan's plan, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the plan was fully supported by all. The Russian envoy said talk about the need for Assad to step down cast doubt on the West's commitment to the Annan plan and encouraged the opposition to keep up the fight.

Hague, however, confirmed that Britain still believes Assad should stand aside.

"But the important thing is that the Annan plan is pursued in whatever way it can be pursued," he said. "The alternatives are the Annan plan or ever-increasing chaos in Syria, and a descent closer and closer to all-out civil war and collapse."

China on Monday also condemned the killings of civilians in Houla and called for an end to the violence, but gave no indication it was rethinking its strategy toward the fighting in Syria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said that Beijing fully supports Annan's mediation efforts and the UN monitors.

The protests against Assad began in March 2011 and turned into an uprising after his government responded with a violent crackdown on dissent. The U.N. estimated that at least 9,000 people were killed in the first year of the conflict, but hundreds more have been killed since then.

Science Fiction University: The Purpose of Art: Part Seven: Good Art or Bad?

After spending six weeks talking about the nature and purpose of the arts, we need to start asking some practical questions: How can we tell good art from bad art? How do we watch movies, listen to songs, and read books in order to get the most meaning and the most entertainment out of them? When should we ask, ?Is it true?? This week we talk about what makes art good or bad.

Glorifying God

A conscientious Christian?s first question is usually going to be, ?Does this book, song or movie, glorify God?? But there?s a problem with this question. I have often heard Christians use I Corinthians 10:31b (??whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God?) to argue that the only kind of art Christians should expose themselves to is Christian art. They say it is the only art which glorifies God. Not only are they wrong, but they are making Paul?s words mean the exact opposite of what they really mean. Paul was talking about whether it was okay for the Corinthian Christians to eat meat which had been sacrificed to idols and was now being sold in the markets (at a lower cost) by the local pagan priests. Paul?s answer was that some activities are matters of the believer?s heart, not matters of right and wrong. Those who choose not to eat the meat should do so having their hearts in the right place, and those who choose to eat it should also have their hearts in the right place. The same goes for art: while we can eventually ask whether an artistic text glorifies God, we cannot base this answer on whether or not the text is Christian. Applying I Corinthians 10, we should say that the first question to ask is, ?Will my viewing or listening to this art form be done in a way which glorifies God??

Also keep in mind something I?ve said before: to judge whether art is good or bad is to apply two kinds of good and two kinds of bad. Art can be morally good or bad and it can be aesthetically good or bad. The first has more to do with truth, the second has more to do with beauty. As I?ve said in this series, the first purpose of art involves experiences of beauty, so that is the next place to look.

Do You Like It?

When you?re trying to decide if a book or movie is any good, ask yourself this: ?Am I enjoying it?? Art should entertain us. It should give us pleasure. If we?re not enjoying it, there may be something wrong. Keep in mind, though, a distinction which Aristotle made between what he called enjoyable beauty and admirable beauty. Art that we enjoy is appealing to our aesthetic sense?our sense of beauty in our imaginations. We like it without having to try. But Aristotle said our imaginations can be mis-trained?exposed to the wrong things?so that we end up liking things we shouldn?t. If we like popular music, it?s because we?ve been exposed to it. We enjoy it easily, without any training. In this case we?re experiencing enjoyable beauty. But if we enjoy explicitly sexual art or graphically violent movies, it is because our sense of beauty has been corrupted. In addition to this, however, our imaginations can be trained so that we can learn to like things we otherwise wouldn?t.

Many of us are willing to acknowledge the genius of William Shakespeare, but far fewer of us actually enjoy reading his plays. They?re difficult and take a lot of work. But when good teachers show us how to read and appreciate Shakespeare, we begin experiencing admirable beauty. And then the more comfortable we get with great but difficult art which we are admiring, the more it also becomes enjoyable. So one way to judge whether art is good or not, is to ask ourselves if we?re entertained by it?if we like it. Another is to listen to and learn from trustworthy experts and teachers what is and isn?t good art so that we can make more decisions about it ourselves.

Next week we?ll discuss how we can judge the goodness of art based on the kind of experience it puts us through.

Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver Explains How Cooking Makes You 'Good-Looking'

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has made a name for himself with his hit television show "The Naked Chef" and his best selling cookbooks, but the British restaurateur has also made it his mission to get people on the fast-track to healthy eating.

Just last week, Jamie Oliver launched the first-ever, global Food Revolution Day, which took place in about 60 countries urging people to focus on food education and to fight obesity. When Oliver sat down with MTV as part of our Pioneers Speaker Series, he told us that young people are the ones who have the power to make a positive change toward healthy eating.

"I think the youth are really important customers, really important. If the youth could come up with something for the youth, I think that would be incredible," Oliver said. "I've worked with so many kids in school and I think they are frustrated whether it's with their own school food or whether it's stuff they get out. I think they are all waiting for something brilliant and when it happens, I think they will buy into it."

With Americans losing the war against obesity and children growing up overweight, Oliver is determined to implement a healthy lifestyle by getting people back into their kitchens, having nutritious meals at school and encouraging communities to plan health-conscious events. But Oliver admits that in order to do this, people have to do their own homework and educate themselves.

"For me, it's about being street wise about food, it's about not getting mugged, and mugged means not getting ripped off it you know about food," Oliver said. "You know where to shop, you know what to avoid, you know what you can do."

And once you have that knowledge, not only can you make a delicious meal, but according to Oliver, you'll probably reap some other benefits, too.

"If you got two good-looking fellas and one can cook and one cant, it's the one that can cook that's getting the look and vice versa for the girls," Oliver admitted. "So all I'm trying to say is cooking is really fun, you're saving money and it will be with you for the rest of your life."

And Oliver says the perfect ingredient when putting together a healthy meal is of course, music. Oliver listens to a different array of songs while preparing his dish.

"I'm split between sort of like ... [the Red Hot] Chili Peppers, Killers, Strokes, sort of mix it up that sort of way and then old, brilliant, miserable British indie music," Oliver said. "But I'm quite eclectic, I like a bit of everything."
